Developing the Business Impact Assessment (BIA)  Project Plan

For the success of a Business Impact Assessment, you will need to create and follow a well defined Project Plan.  The project plan should define key members, objectives, and the steps that will need to be followed for the success of the project.  The key to a successful project lies in the development of a functional and comprehensive project plan.

Phase One - BIA Project Development

For this document, a four phased approach has been explained.  During the first phase, you will identify the project team, key business unit members, and define the scope and objectives.

Phase Two - Gather Data

In the second phase, data collection is completed.  If you choose to use a questionnaire and face-to-face interviews, those will be done during this process.  Processes are identified and recovery time objectives are stated.  Also, the amount of potential impact to business processes is defined.

Phase Three - Application & Data Criticality

The third phase conducts the Application and Data Criticality Analysis.  During this activity, you will identify the critical applications and data that current contain vital data.  The recoverability of Information Systems will be identified during this phase.  Since business processes and their recovery time frames are identified in the previous phase, you will be able to map the capabilities to the processes.  By doing this you will identify recovery time frame gaps and implement strategies for recovery.

Phase Four - Analyze the Data

Lastly in the fourth phase, you will analyze the data, review the findings with the business units and report the final findings to senior management.  If a Risk Assessment has been completed, the results can be reported with the BIA findings.
