Business Impact Analysis (BIA), Disaster Recovery Planning (DRP) and Business Continuity Program (BCP): The HIPAA Security Rule 164.308(a)(7)(i) identifies Contingency Plan as a standard under Administrative Safeguards. Contingency Planning means the overall process of developing an approved set of arrangements and procedures to insure your business can respond to a disaster and resume its critical business functions within a required time frame objective.
Security Risk Analysis/Assessment: Risk Analysis is often regarded as the first step towards HIPAA Security compliance. Risk analysis is a required implementation specification under the Security Management Process standard of the Administrative Safeguards portion of the HIPAA Security Rule as per Section 164.308(a)(1). The overall objective of a HIPAA risk analysis is to document the Potential risks and vulnerabilities to the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of electronic protected health information (ePHI) and determine the appropriate safeguards to bring the level of risk to an acceptable and manageable level.
Security Audit & Evaluation:
The Risk Management standard requires that organizations on a regular basis identify, select, and implement controls, countermeasures, reporting and verification to achieve an appropriate level of risk at an acceptable cost. Organizations must also repeat the process of identification of all vulnerabilities to electronic PHI as well as other information assets and determine appropriate security measures to reduce risks to a reasonable and appropriate level.
The Security Rule requires that covered entities periodically conduct an evaluation of their security safeguards to demonstrate and document their compliance with the entity’s security policy and the requirements of the Security Rule.
